CIE. FOR WANT OF A BETTER PUSH
Bolzano Danza returns at the Antonio Dalle Nogare Foundation for an innovative and multidisciplinary performance entitled PUSH.
Created by the eclectic Australian artist Deborah Lennie, who has been living in France since 2011 where she founded the company For want of a better supported by the National Choreographic Center of Caen, PUSH is actually a collective work freely inspired by Gertrude Stein‘s text Tender Buttons (1914 ), an act of freedom from the conventions of language and society. Part of PUSH are two dancers – the American Annie Hanauer and the Norwegian Ingvild Marstein Olsen -, a voice (Lennie herself), a piano, a sound designer (Patrice Grente) and a video created by Christophe Bisson with the stop motion technique (rapid sequence of photos that becomes movement).
Like Stein’s text which is suspended between poetry and prose and whose extracts are recited here in three languages – French, Norwegian and English – PUSH leads the spectators to overcome the understanding of immediate meaning, pushing them to abandon themselves to the musicality of the language in relationship with bodies. Exactly like Stein’s disjointed text, the bodies also tell the story of the fragmentation of our lives in a kaleidoscope of fragments, because Lennie reminds us: «we are our fragments».
